On October 18, the 18th conference of the Valdai International Discussion Club opens in Sochi. Almost 300 political scientists from 45 countries of the world will take part in it. On the last day, the plenary meeting plans to attend Vladimir Putin… As the Valdians themselves told AiF.ru, the main topic remains the coronavirus – how the pandemic is changing the world.
Who will come?
The XVIII conference of “Big Valdai” starts again in Sochi in the already traditional place for the club – on Krasnaya Polyana. The organizers did their best to ensure that this conference marked the return of the club to full-fledged work. Almost three hundred participants, including 126 foreign guests, are planning to take part in various sessions and in the plenary session. These are not only political scientists, but also former and current officials, public figures, deputies and officials from different countries.
For example, in the first session, the speaker will be the Foreign Minister (2003-2010) and the Brazilian Defense Minister (2011-2014) Celso Amorim… Among the foreign guests, the event is attended by the vice president of Google More Brand, Senior Adviser to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran, Director of the Institute for Iranian and Eurasian Studies, Former Ambassador to Moscow Mehdi Date, Chairman of the Kazakhstan Council on Foreign Relations, Assistant to the President of Kazakhstan Erlan Karin and many others. About half of them will come to Sochi, the rest will work at the forum in video format.
In total, as the organizers note, the conference, which will last from 18 to 21 October, will be attended by representatives of 45 countries, including Russia, Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Great Britain, Germany, Iran, China, Malaysia, the USA, Turkey and Japan.
Traditionally, the plenary session of the club will be attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin. As told to reporters press secretary of the head of state Dmitry Peskov, this year the tradition will not be broken. The President will take part in the work of the Big Valdai in full-time format, but with certain covid restrictions. The participation of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was also confirmed, who will share with the guests of the forum his Russian vision of key aspects of the development of the international situation, as well as answer questions from the conference participants.
Valdai will also be visited Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, Aide to the President of Russia Maxim Oreshkin, Ruslan Edelgeriev, Advisor and Special Representative of the Head of State for Climate Issues, Head of Rossotrudnichestvo Evgeny Primakov…
What will be discussed?
The main topic of the forum is “Global shake-up – XXI: people, values, state”. “Now in numerous scientific articles and speeches of political scientists one can feel the apocalyptic notes that we all felt in the zero years after the terrorist attacks of September 11, Beslan, and Nord-Ost. Then it seemed that the world was looming the Third World War against Terrorism. Now all the main panels of the Valdai Club will describe the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic in quite apocalyptic tones, – says AiF.ru a permanent participant of Bolshoy Valdai. German political scientist Alexander Rahr… – Political scientists now largely perform the function that writers performed in the 19th century, trying to describe the processes taking place in society and try to predict how events will develop in the future. And I think we will have a big discussion about what the pandemic means for different countries. ”
At the moment, the psychological consequences of the pandemic, which cannot be ignored, are beginning to emerge more and more clearly, TASS said. Andrey Bystritsky, Chairman of the Board of the Valdai Club Fund… “The pandemic neurotized society, exacerbated social problems, changed the behavioral habits of people,” he said.
At the same time, other problems will not be forgotten. The “global shake-up” referred to in the topic of the conference is a reference not only to the pandemic, but also to numerous events that have a significant impact on the world community, the Valdai people note. Experts will not miss their attention and the state of affairs in Afghanistan after the withdrawal of American troops from there and the change of power in the country.
“The situation in this country, although indirectly, rather strongly influences the state of affairs in Russia, and even more so on the state of affairs in our closest neighbors, the countries of Central Asia. The challenge is big, there are many disputes, but something needs to be done. We see how difficult it is for the world to agree on this issue, although this is our common problem, “Bystritsky said.
Rahr said a lot of attention will be focused on the climate agenda, which is spreading to more countries, as well as on the new military alliance recently created by the United States, Britain and Australia.
