Stoltenberg: no deadline for Ukraine and Georgia to join NATO

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the organization had decided to admit Ukraine and Georgia, but did not set a deadline. He said this in an interview with the Italian newspaper La Repubblica.

The Secretary General noted that Ukraine now has a much higher defensive capacity than it was in 2014. The Secretary General also recalled that the principle of collective defense applies only to NATO member states.

“Ukraine has already applied for accession and we have decided to work towards it by supporting its reforms, helping to modernize its armed forces to our standards,” Stoltenbeg said, stressing that NATO has not yet set a deadline.

Recall that earlier the American newspaper New York Times expressed the opinion that Ukraine in the foreseeable future will not be able to join NATO. According to the authors of the article, US President Joe Biden and the leaders of European countries are not ready to take such a step, even though the White House says that it “will not allow Moscow to encroach on Ukraine’s desire to join NATO.”
