Stoltenberg: NATO will not compromise on enlargement issues

NATO will not compromise on the expansion of the alliance in the east, Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Polish Radio.

“We will not make any compromises when it comes to principle,” Stoltenberg said. He added that each state “has the right to choose its own path and decide whether it wants to belong to the military alliance that is NATO or not.”

The Secretary General called the deployment of troops in the eastern part of NATO in order to protect the allies a “key right” of the alliance.

At the same time, he announced his readiness for a dialogue with the Russian Federation on arms control issues, the transparency of military exercises, and mechanisms related to risk reduction.

In addition, according to Stoltenberg, NATO is ready for mutual arms control with Russia.

Earlier, Assistant to the President of the United States for National Security Jake Sullivan called useful this week’s consultations on Russian security proposals. He noted that these discussions were frank and direct, and also gave reason to think.

Recall that bilateral negotiations between the Russian Federation and the United States took place in Geneva last Monday. On January 12, a meeting of the Russia-NATO Council was held in Brussels, and on January 13, negotiations in the RF-OSCE format ended in Vienna.
