Stoltenberg links the possibility of Finland and Sweden to join NATO with the demands of Turkey

Finland and Sweden are unlikely to become candidates for NATO membership at the upcoming summit if they do not meet Turkey’s demands, Anadolu news agency quoted NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg as saying.

According to the Secretary General, Sweden and Finland, as invited states, will be able to take part in the NATO summit in Madrid, which will be held on 28-30 June. At the same time, Stoltenberg noted that it would be “difficult for them to gain a foothold” as candidate countries if they did not respond to Turkey’s demands by June 28.

Finland and Sweden against the backdrop of a special operation in Ukraine on May 18 handed over to the secretary general of the alliance an application for joining the alliance. Turkey has decided to block the start of the process of consideration of these applications. Recep Tayyip Erdogan issued a statement that Ankara would not support the applications of Helsinki and Stockholm to NATO, as it could not rely on their assurances about the PKK banned in Turkey.

Earlier, SM-News reported that Finland intends to deploy 64 F-35 fighters 150 kilometers from the Russian border.
