Sometimes they come back: AvtoVAZ became a Russian legal entity again

The day before the New Year, AvtoVAZ announced that the company had become Russian again. I mean, in terms of jurisdiction – it is no longer registered in the Dutch offshore. And the French still have a controlling stake. But everything can change, it is possible that the plant in Togliatti will return to the ownership of Russia.

“In accordance with the agreements, the transfer of the joint venture to Russian jurisdiction has been completed. 100% of AvtoVAZ shares were transferred to a new joint company – Lada Auto Holding, which has its legal address in Moscow. AvtoVAZ is a domestic brand, the plant operates in Russia, now we are legally enforcing this. The French partners fully support such a decision, ”says Rostec’s pre-New Year message.

At the moment, Renault owns 66.7% of the shares in the joint venture, while Rostec owns only 32.3%. In turn, there is no such division of “Lada” in the French concern anymore. A year ago, on January 1, 2021, the Dacia-Lada structural unit was created, in which there is no place for our car industry. There will be only one platform – CMF-B (Logan / Sandero III) – everything else will go under the knife.

“The French can be blamed for anything other than being incompetent car manufacturers. According to the French scenario, stage number one is the reduction in the number of employees at AvtoVAZ. Stage two: liquidation of the Lada brand. In principle, AvtoVAZ is not of any interest to the global automotive industry, ”an expert in the automotive industry warned back in 2009 Timur Khubaev

Actually, this is how it happens. Public policy. If someone does not know: the largest shareholder of Renault is the French government, 20% of the capital (more than 23% of the votes). But this is officially, de facto, the influence of the state is much greater. Plus, Renault has a share of Nissan – 15%. And in Nissan the share of the Japanese government is 21%. This is how everything is started …

Both countries of Russia are by no means friendly, and they do not need anything at all for us to have our own industry. Accordingly, it is being systematically destroyed. This is not the first year.

In 2014, the Vice President for Technical Development was kicked out of AvtoVAZ Evgeniya Shmeleva and his entire team, including the engineering director Sergey Kurdyuk… Shmelev then warned that everything would end with the transition of the plant to “screwdriver assembly” and the complete loss of its design school. This is exactly what happened soon, the French dispersed the factory design bureau and began to impose their own models.

If nothing changes, then the plant in Togliatti will soon have a completely sorry future. From an enterprise with a full production cycle, it will turn into a line for assembling cars from imported components, only bodies will be riveted on site, and even that is not a fact. Plus, they will finally destroy all the production of spare parts for “Niva”, “classics” and front-wheel drive cars (2108-2110). The French do not need them, the less Russian cars remain, the more they will sell their disposable trash.

But, in this case, fortunately, the international situation is becoming more and more tense, and this gives the plant a chance. The Americans have already left Togliatti, and quietly – the GM-AvtoVAZ JV was closed in December 2019. No statements, they just took and sold their 50% stake to AvtoVAZ. In Washington, they just made a decision, and in General Motors they saluted it. A similar decision can be made at the Elysee Palace.

In April, elections in France, who will come to power – is still unclear. Plus the growing US pressure. There are too many uncertainties.

And the company itself is not doing very well, how to put it mildly. Renault’s net loss at the end of 2020 amounted to a record $ 9.7 billion, while in 2019 losses amounted to only about $ 22 million – count, worked “to zero”. There are no data for last year yet, but for the first half of 2021, sales were still 24.2% below the values of the first half of 2019. Plus the growing shortage of car electronics – Renault planned to cut production by 100,000 cars, but this figure has already been doubled. The AvtoVAZ conveyor also stood idle for a long time.

Let’s say this happened – the frog lovers left the banks of the Volga. What are we left with? It is clear that there will be no more deliveries from other Renault branches, we will have to deal with the very “import substitution” that various “brace” figures were so fond of trumpeting about.

“Niva” (Niva Legend) and the former “Shniva” (Niva Travel) will definitely remain, these are completely domestic developments, thanks to the great Soviet designer Peter Prusov… Most likely, the Russian names will be returned to the cars, otherwise the imported ones somehow enrage … The only thing that is not clear is what to do with the electrics and electronics? The same electronic control units (ECUs) for the engine in the Russian Federation have not been made for a long time, in 2008 the enterprise was destroyed. Putting carburetors is not an option, they are no longer produced either. Problem…

The ECU, of course, can be ordered from the Chinese, they will do it, it is not difficult for them. Exactly like all other electrical components. Most likely, they will do so, because officials do not like to develop production in the Russian Federation. More precisely, they try in every possible way not to do this. Wrecking, nothing else.

Undoubtedly, the “Niva” would not hurt a diesel engine, compact, simple and reliable. Without any electronics, with mechanical fuel equipment. There are such in nature, for example, the 3C-T diesel from Toyota. On the car, the engine rises like a native, the fuel consumption drops by one and a half times, the traction characteristics, on the contrary, are doubled. You can buy a license and start production. But this is again unscientific fantasy, the Yedrosov’s rats are not capable of creating.

With the “Grant”, everything seems to be fine too, because this is, in fact, a deep restyling of the VAZ 2110. The problem is again in the electrics with electronics and a number of other components. But here again you have to ask the PRC for help.

You will have to forget about Largus, there is nothing domestic, about Xray and Vesta too – the share of imported components exceeds 50%.

Quite a successful compact (B-class) “Kalina” in 2018, Monsieur was taken out of production. It is understandable – you need to sell your Renault Logan. Meanwhile, our car was much nicer than an ugly French car, and everything was fine with maintainability. In principle, the release of “Kalina” can be resumed. Unless, of course, foreigners have destroyed the stamps for the production of body parts. These could …

And the store has “Shniva-2”, which was presented back in 2014. JV “GM-AvtoVAZ” sold all its developments to “AvtoVAZ”, more precisely, transferred it along with its block of shares. The concept is almost ready, only the motors are missing. We need a two-liter gasoline engine with a capacity of about 140-150 hp. and a torque of 170-200 Nm, as well as a diesel engine – 120-140 hp. and the same 200 Nm. There are no domestic motors with such parameters, so you will have to buy licenses again. And again – in theory.

For minivans and commercial vehicles – a complete failure. The project “Nadezhda” in 2006 also killed the FSUE “Rosoboronexport”, in August of that year the car was taken off the assembly line. And soon they destroyed all the stamps for the production of body parts. Although they wanted to redeem them. Again, it is difficult to call such a thing other than sabotage.

Pickups and vans are still being produced on the basis of Niva and Grants; these cars are quite popular with small businesses. True, godlessly expensive, but this problem can be solved.

And not only this one. There would be a desire, and there is enough money in the country, how much of it is withdrawn abroad every year is known to everyone, and these are only official figures. Enough for everything: for the restoration of the production of engine ECUs, and for the purchase of a license for some minivan (for example, the Mitsubishi Delica type – four-wheel drive cars are the most relevant in our country!), And for engines – gasoline and diesel.

However, it is too early to talk about the prospects of the Russian car industry. At the moment, we see how our authorities are calmly watching how they destroy a plant built with public money. And they do nothing.
