Melikov has been the interim head of Dagestan since October 5, 2020. Prior to that, the politician occupied the seat of the senator.
Representatives of the people’s assembly made a decision on the head of the region at one of the sessions of parliament. Melikov was supported by 82 out of 90 deputies. The chairman of the counting commission, Artur Israpilov, announced the election of the head of the subject.
“Melikov Sergey Alimovich has been elected the head of the Republic of Dagestan,” he said.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin handed over to the People’s Assembly three candidates for the post of head of the republic. They are Samir Abdulkhalikov, a member of the electoral commission of the region, with a decisive vote, Kamil Davdiev, deputy chairman of the local parliament, and Sergei Melikov.
