Self-criticism is useful within reasonable limits. It helps to evaluate your mistakes, objectively analyze actions, develop. But excessive self-criticism can cause serious harm to a person, which will negatively affect his relationships, affairs and internal state.

From childhood, a person is instilled with certain norms of behavior, on which he is guided all his life when evaluating his actions and deeds. Self-criticism helps to choose goals based on real opportunities, to improve and develop, taking into account one’s shortcomings or negative experience. However, self-criticism is not always a useful quality.

Often, self-digging and awareness of one’s mistakes leads to the opposite result – it launches a program of self-destruction.

Signs of increased self-criticism

Everything should be in moderation, and self-criticism should be objective in order to be useful. You have increased self-criticism if:

  • you experience a constant sense of guilt;
  • live without risks, because you doubt your abilities;
  • consider yourself weaker, worse than others;
  • mistakes are perceived very painfully;
  • do not praise yourself;
  • do not take on new tasks, because you are pre-configured to defeat;
  • divide everything into good and bad;
  • afraid to express your opinion;
  • perceive mistakes as a consequence of your shortcomings.

A self-critical person constantly controls himself, thinks for a long time where a quick reaction and decisive action are needed. Often, he simply refuses profitable cases and offers only because he considers himself insufficiently competent or unworthy. This is the result of a long self-digging, too hard work on the mistakes that led not to the improvement of the personality, but to an inferiority complex.

Objective self-criticism

Evaluation criteria we take from the outside in the process of growing up. They are instilled in us. But only a normal assessment of actions, opportunities and behavior leads to the development of personality.

Objective self-criticism does not concern the revision of the values ​​and qualities of an individual. This is work on the mistakes that led to a bad result, not because the person is bad, but because he did it wrong for a certain reason.

Self-criticism helps to identify the very reason and find a solution on how to avoid a repetition of a negative scenario in the future. For example, someone who was not hired because they were late for an interview will not repeat the same mistake when meeting with the next employer. The Samoyed, on the other hand, will find many more possible reasons for refusal and, most likely, will not make another attempt to get a similar position.

How to make self-criticism useful

First of all, you need to objectively evaluate each specific situation.

For self-criticism to be beneficial, adhere to the following scheme:

  1. analyze errors and search for the true causes of failure;
  2. offer options for solving the problem, taking into account the identified causes of the error;
  3. change the negative attitude (the mistake happened not because I am bad, but because I was in a hurry or did not have time, etc.).

Objective self-criticism allows you to identify errors that can be corrected if you make an effort. Do not engage in self-discipline, because it does not bring benefits, but only adds unnecessary complexes to the shortcomings.
