Saakashvili is confident in the victory of the opposition over the current Georgian authorities

Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili promised to bring the struggle of the opposition with the country’s authorities to victory after today’s arrest of the chairman of the opposition United National Movement party Nika Melia.

On Facebook, Saakashvili urged supporters to use all kinds of political methods of struggle. He also stated that what is happening in Georgia is genocide and the desire of the authorities to completely destroy the country.

Recall that Georgian law enforcement officers this morning carried out a special operation to arrest the opposition leader, the leader of the party of former President Mikheil Saakashvili Nika Melia, during which, according to updated data, more than 20 people were also detained. It was reported that the police used pepper gas during the arrests.

According to Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, the chairman of the opposition party of Georgia, Nika Melia, was detained for organizing the assault on the country’s parliament in the summer of 2019.

Earlier, the chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party, ex-speaker of parliament, Irakli Kobakhidze, called the operation to arrest Melia exemplary.

However, the actions of the Georgian authorities have raised concerns at the US embassy in Tbilisi. The diplomatic mission said that “Georgia took a step back from the democratic path of the states belonging to the Euro-Atlantic family, having arrested the deputy Melia.”

In turn, British Ambassador to Tbilisi Mark Clayton said that he was “shocked by what is happening this morning at the UNM headquarters,” noting that violence and chaos are the last thing Georgia needs now.
