Saakashvili in prison hospital – opposition against

Ukraine, represented by the Foreign Ministry and the Verkhovna Rada, interferes in the internal affairs of Georgia

On Monday evening it became known that the ex-president of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili transferred from a prison in the city of Rustavi to a prison hospital on the outskirts of Tbilisi. The news changed the plans of the opposition, which was preparing a large-scale protest rally outside the walls of a prison in Rustavi. The meeting was hastily moved to the center of the capital.

Leader of the largest opposition party in Georgia “United National Movement” Nicanor Melia announced that the protest would continue until the release of Mikhail Saakashvili, while the protesters’ demand is to transfer the ex-president from the prison hospital to a civilian clinic.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has already issued an official statement urging the Georgian authorities to transfer Saakashvili to a civilian clinic.

“The further stay of the citizen of Ukraine Mikhail Saakashvili in the penitentiary medical institution creates additional risks and stress, which can be avoided, guided by humane considerations. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ukrainian Embassy in Georgia continue to keep the situation around the citizen of Ukraine Mikhail Saakashvili under special control, “

– stated in the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

We decided to stand up for the Ukrainian citizen Saakashvili and 89 deputies of the Verkhovna Rada, sending appeals to the President and Prime Minister of Georgia demanding to intervene in the situation and provide the prisoner with an adequate level of medical care and return to Ukraine.

Supporters of the third president spent the whole night outside the Georgian government administration building in Tbilisi, and law enforcement officers did not sleep either – by morning, an additional fence appeared near the administration building.

On Tuesday morning, the protest moved to the building of the Ministry of Justice, where the rally was also held, but the participants only lasted for two hours. The organizers of the protest insistently invited everyone to rest and come back to the center of the capital to take part in the protests.

Against this background, few people noticed the attempt of the leader of the “Strategy of Agmashenebeli” Georgy Vashadze imagine “Action plan to prevent civil confrontation”, in which the main place was given to compromises on both sides in order to prevent another civil confrontation in the country.

Mikhail Saakashvili himself assures that he was transferred to a prison hospital by deception, announcing that he was being transferred to a civilian clinic, to which he agreed. According to him, in the prison hospital he was beaten, forcibly taken to the ward, where he accidentally touched some medical device, after which he was given an injection. This is stated in a letter that he was able to convey to his supporters.

Minister of Justice Rati Bregadze accused Saakashvili of insulting the medical staff of the prison hospital.

“When Saakshavili was moved to facility no. 18, he, unfortunately, inflicted physical and verbal abuse on our employees, who care about the security of the country and the protection of the rights of every prisoner for 24 hours. And we will not allow anyone to offend them. Of course, there will be an appropriate legal response, now we are studying this fact “,

– said Bregadze on the air of the Imedi TV channel.

While the opposition was holding a rally in the center of the capital, a meeting of the US Ambassador to Georgia took place Kelly Degnan and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Erica Olson with the leaders of the opposition forces – to discuss the situation in the country. The meeting took place at the residence of the United States Ambassador.
