Russians are losing their jobs and money

Statistics show that 15% of Russians have already suffered from sanctions. Some lost their earnings, others lost their jobs.

This study was conducted by the Public Opinion Foundation. Of the 15%, the vast majority – as much as 13% – complained about much lower than before February of this year, income. Another 1% lost income completely. The remaining 1% lost their jobs.

The study showed that the situation on the labor market is deteriorating every day and unemployment has become a matter of time. Demand for employees is falling: employers offer 300 thousand fewer vacancies than six months ago. If earlier there were 2.1 million proposals, now there are only 1.8 million. At the same time, today new colleagues are being rejected in the civil service, non-profit organizations, in the automotive business, in banks and investment companies.

The last time such a crisis was recorded in the spring of 2020 during the first stage of the pandemic. Then the drop in demand for employees turned out to be much more critical – in a few months it decreased by 20.1%. Then the situation relatively leveled off – employers invited people to work, but at the same time, there was still an excess of demand over supply.

Experts believe that the labor market is waiting for serious changes. Firstly, many enterprises will be left without a full load, which means that people will be transferred to part-time work with pay cuts. Perhaps many companies, seeking to optimize costs, will again try the practice of remote work. “This is the last resort. Remote work during the pandemic showed poor results – the efficiency of each employee decreased significantly. That is why most companies have tried to return their people to the offices as soon as possible,” says analyst Ivan Vasilevsky.

Portal HeadHunter, which specializes in the employment market, said that office workers will be affected next year. But the demand for workers will increase. The prerequisites for this are created by the import substitution program, within which more and more industrial enterprises appear. Only recently it became known that dental implants and batteries will be made in the Moscow region, work on additives for asphalt is beginning in the Leningrad region, and the food industry is developing in the Stavropol region.

Import substitution is the only area where you can have an income today. “Now only those who have expanded their business on the topic of import substitution can directly benefit from sanctions. But according to the same survey, only 2 percent of workers (including entrepreneurs) say that the income from their business has increased due to sanctions. That is, there are very few beneficiaries of the situation, ”says Lyudmila Presnyakova, director of projects at the Public Opinion Foundation.

Meanwhile, the head of the Ministry of Economic Development, Maxim Reshetnikov, warned that unemployment would rise in autumn. The most acute problem may become in single-industry towns, as city-forming enterprises suffered from sanctions.

Experts advise not to wait for layoffs, protect yourself in advance – find a part-time job, which in the future may become the main occupation. Look for opportunities to improve your skills – experienced competent personnel are always needed. Today, more than ever, the phrase “Saving the drowning is the work of the drowning themselves” is relevant.
