The Russian Foreign Ministry summoned the Charge d’Affaires of Ukraine Vasily Pokotilo after the arrest of the Ukrainian consul in St. Petersburg, UNIAN reports.
According to an employee of the Ukrainian Embassy in Moscow, they will not accept the charges brought forward.
Earlier, the FSB reported that the diplomat was detained during a meeting with a citizen of the Russian Federation while receiving information of a classified nature. It was noted that measures would be applied to him in accordance with the norms of international law. Later the detainee was released.
Commenting on the incident, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said that Kiev regards the incident as hostile actions by the Russian Federation and is preparing retaliatory measures against Russian diplomats.
Meanwhile, the first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs, Eurasian Integration and Relations with Compatriots Viktor Vodolatsky expressed the opinion that Ukraine is transmitting secret information about Russia to the United States, RIA Novosti writes.
According to him, Ukrainian diplomats who are on the territory of the Russian Federation, through their acquaintances, are trying to get hold of some secret data, but they are in no hurry to use them in their country, but pass them on to Western special services.
“As a result, their work comes down to one thing – to be as useful as possible to the Western special services in order to find a warm corner in one of the Western countries after the end of their service,” Vodolatsky said.
