The Russian Foreign Ministry said that the incident in the Kerch Strait does not fall under the jurisdiction of international arbitration. Hearings in this case should take place before October 16.
The Russian Foreign Ministry responded to Ukraine’s claim to international arbitration over the incident in the Kerch Strait, which occurred in November 2018. The Office indicated that the case is outside the jurisdiction of the court in The Hague.
We are talking about an attempt by three military courts of Ukraine to pass through the territorial waters of Russia in the Kerch Strait region without permission. As a result, the Ukrainian ships were detained by the Russian border service.
Later it turned out that the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko was behind the provocation at that time. He hoped to use the incident to postpone elections in the country. This plan didn’t work.
Nevertheless, on April 1, 2019, Ukraine filed a lawsuit in international arbitration over the incident. In August 2020, Russia filed preliminary objections to the case, calling into question the arbitrator’s jurisdiction. Hearings in the case should take place before October 16.
The claims of the Ukrainian side go beyond the jurisdiction of this international arbitration,
– voiced the official position of the country at the Russian Foreign Ministry.
