An employee of the military attaché of the Russian embassy, who was detained in Italy in connection with the espionage case, as well as his leader, left the country at the request of the authorities, NOVA reports citing its sources.
It is clarified that the diplomats flew out of Italy on April 1 on an Aeroflot flight.
We will remind, on March 31, the Italian media reported the arrest in Rome of two people on suspicion of espionage for Russia. Later, in the special unit of the carabinieri (ROS), they explained that an Italian soldier and a Russian officer were detained on the order of the Rome prosecutor’s office. As a result, the Italian citizen was taken into custody, and checks were organized against the Russian military regarding his diplomatic status.
Later, the head of the Italian Foreign Ministry, Luigi Di Maio, conveyed a strong protest from the local government to the Russian ambassador. The ambassador was also notified of the immediate expulsion of two Russian officials “involved in this very serious case.”
