The Italian Foreign Ministry summoned the Russian ambassador Sergei Razov, RIA Novosti reports, referring to a representative of the department.
It is clarified that the order to summon the ambassador was given by Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio after the arrest of the Russian diplomat on suspicion of espionage.
The Russian Embassy in Rome confirmed the detention of an employee of the military attaché’s office. They stressed that the circumstances of the incident are currently being clarified, and expressed the hope that this will not affect relations between the Russian Federation and Italy.
Earlier in Rome, two people were detained, suspected of spying for the Russian Federation. According to the carabinieri, both were detained during the transfer of documents in exchange for a monetary reward. It was clarified that the Italian officer, the captain of the Italian Navy, was arrested, and the Russian could be expelled from the country.
We will remind, last week six employees of the Ministry of Defense of Bulgaria were detained on suspicion of espionage in favor of Russia.
