Zakharova also added that the Russian authorities are ready to take on any multilateral schemes that will contribute to strengthening stability and security in the world. However, the negotiation format should not be changed by force, but only on a voluntary and consensus basis, the representative of the ministry explained.
Earlier, the US President’s Special Envoy for Arms Control Marshall Billingsley said that Moscow would prolong START should convince China also to "sit down at the negotiating table." He explained that one of the main problems with the new START Treaty is that Beijing does not participate in it.
The Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty was signed in 2010 by the then presidents of Russia and the United States - Dmitry Medvedev and Barack Obama. The agreement entered into force in the 2011 year, its term expires in February 2021 - go. According to the document, the Russian and American sides within seven years commit themselves to reduce the number of deployed strategic carriers - intercontinental ballistic missiles, ballistic missiles of submarines, as well as heavy strategic bombers to 700 Units.
