Russia and ASEAN countries adopted a joint statement following the summit

Participants of the IV Russia-ASEAN Summit adopted a joint statement. The document, translated from English, has been published on the Kremlin’s website.

The statement says that Russia and the countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will interact on the basis of the principles of respect for sovereignty, equality and non-interference in internal affairs.

In particular, Russia and the ASEAN countries plan to strengthen cooperation in the field of politics and security. The parties intend to “intensify interaction at a high level.”

The states agreed to ensure the safety and freedom of navigation, as well as unimpeded trade.

“We declare that we will actively contribute to the sustainable economic recovery of the region,” the document says.

In addition, the summit participants supported the strengthening of interaction between Russia and ASEAN in order to recover from the coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier, President Vladimir Putin, speaking at the summit via video link, announced the similarity of the positions of Russia and the ASEAN members on key international issues.
