The famous Hollywood actor Richard Gere will testify at the trial of the ex-head of the Italian Ministry of Internal Affairs, the leader of the Liga party, Matteo Salvini, who is accused of illegally holding migrants in the summer of 2019 and abuse of office. ANSA writes about it.
The publication reports that the court in Palermo accepted all requests from the prosecutor’s office for testimony from the prosecution. The first three testimonies are planned to be heard on December 17th.
Salvini, who was personally present at the first session, expressed the hope that “the court will not become a film festival,” the article says.
Recall that in July 2019, Salvini banned the disembarkation of 130 rescued migrants on board the Gregoretti ship in Italian ports. According to him, the decision to ban the disembarkation of migrants was taken collectively and all competent cabinet ministers, as well as the head of government, were aware of the situation.
In early October this year, it was reported that Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte would be summoned to court in the case of former Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Matteo Salvini. Conte earlier said that Salvini’s actions could harm Italy’s position in Europe. The head of government also noted that Salvini, as a politician, can deal with issues of concern to him, but he reduced the topic of migration to the form of “closed ports”.
