Sometimes the remotes from the TV and other household appliances fail, this manifests itself as “sticking” keys – for the key to work, you need to press forcefully several times. The weak point of many consoles is the rubber conductive contacts, which are fixed on the keys themselves and, when pressed, close special spots on the board. Over time, the conductivity of the rubber contacts decreases, they deteriorate, especially the most used keys. For the repair of consoles, repair kits are specially produced and sold, containing a set of flat conductive contacts that are fixed on top of the existing ones, but such a kit still needs to be found and bought – and you want to fix the remote control here and now. You can use another method by restoring conductivity with homemade graphite varnish. To make it, you will need an ordinary simple pencil and a drop of zapon varnish, or any other similar, up to nail varnish.
Preparing the remote
In this case, the old remote control shown in the photo above will be restored. Please note that many modern remotes are equipped with keys with metal contacts, as in tactile (tact) buttons – this method will be irrelevant to restore them, however, such remotes are much more reliable in themselves.
First of all, the remote control must be opened, most often the two halves of the case are held by latches. It is necessary to find a place, for example, at the corner of the body, insert a thin object into a small gap, it is very convenient to use a guitar pick for this. It is necessary to unfasten the latches around the entire perimeter without breaking them or damaging the edges.
Now there is a board on one half of the case, and on the other – the “keyboard” itself with conductive contacts, you can clearly see how certain spots on the board are closed when pressed. At this stage, you can wipe the surface of the board with an alcohol solution – sometimes the keys do not work well due to the fact that it is covered with dust or a coating of dirt.
Manufacturing of conductive varnish
The point is to apply a small amount of conductive varnish to the key contacts, which can be made by hand. The meaning is very simple – you need to grind a small piece of lead from a simple pencil into powder, and then mix with a drop of zapon varnish. A regular file or any sharp object is suitable for grinding the lead.
You need just a little varnish, literally 1-2 drops, you can mix it with the powder of the lead in the bottle cap. It is desirable to make the solution a thick and saturated powder so that it has good electrical conductivity. By the way, instead of tsapon varnish, you can use other varnishes that are at hand.
Now you need to apply a small amount of varnish on each contact in the remote control keys, it will not be superfluous to go through each contact again. You can measure the resistance of homemade varnish using a multimeter, applying test leads. The multimeter may show a resistance that is not zero – in this case, this is normal. Now all that remains is to wait for the varnish to dry, assemble the remote control and check its operation.
