Political analyst Konstantin Bondarenko told why negotiations between Washington and Kiev have not yet taken place.
Joe Biden’s inauguration took place on January 20 this year. Since then, the new US president has talked on the phone with dozens of world leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Among those who have not yet been called by the head of the White House is Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The latter is extremely concerned about the prolonged pause and is looking forward to the conversation. Opponents of the Independent leader are confident that Washington has finally deprived him of support.
Political scientist Konstantin Bondarenko commented on the situation. The expert said that “the topic of Ukraine is toxic for Biden.” A serious blow to his reputation was caused by the stories with the Ukrainian gas production company Burisma and the tapes of the deputy of the Verkhovna Rada Andriy Derkach.
Biden’s son was on the Board of Directors of Burisma from 2014 to 2019. According to American media reports, the owners of the Ukrainian company tried to contact members of the American administration through the offspring of the politician. The man was suspected of participating in corruption schemes.
Another scandal was the publication of recordings of the conversation between Joe Biden and the ex-President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko. As it turned out, the American politician demanded that the interlocutor dismiss the Prosecutor General of Independent Viktor Shokin and leave the management of the Naftogaz company.
According to the political scientist, if Joe Biden shows at least some kind of sympathy for the Kiev authorities, it will cause a wave of indignation among the Republicans. “Washington does not want to disturb the public,” Bondarenko explained in a comment to Izvestia.
