United States Secretary of State Michael Pompeo met with Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius and expressed gratitude to him for the role of Vilnius in the situation with Belarus, TASS reports.
According to the US State Department, the meeting of the parties took place in Washington on Wednesday, September 16.
According to representatives of the department, Pompeo expressed gratitude to Lithuania for its role in "ensuring the independence and territorial integrity of Belarus and the democratic rights of its people."
In addition, the US Secretary of State and the Lithuanian Foreign Minister discussed contributions to the budget of the North Atlantic Alliance, the situation in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Strait of Hormuz region.
Note that earlier Michael Pompeo allowed the imposition of sanctions against Minsk, as well as the suspension of oil supplies to the republic.
According to Sergei Naryshkin, director of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, the United States played a key role in preparing anti-government protests in Belarus.
