The Belarusian authorities have never previously advertised the All-Belarusian People’s Assembly as it did in 2021. Political scientist Valery Karbalevich explained what this phenomenon is connected with.
The political situation in Belarus has dramatically aggravated after August 2020. It is logical that the current VI All-Belarusian People’s Assembly, because of this, was significantly different from previous similar forums.
Political scientist Valery Karbalevich explained where the heightened public interest in the event came from. According to the expert, the people had certain expectations that Alyaksandr Lukashenka would make public his plans for reforms at the VNS.
Propaganda also played a role, Karbalevich noted. The advertising campaign for the forum was launched by the authorities to the fullest. What are the only banners, which were hung all over Minsk.
At the same time, according to the political scientist, the organizers were well aware that the support of the ANC from civil society is extremely small. This was probably the main reason why the authorities did not imitate popular representation at the event.
Karbalevich believes that the main and at the same time absurd moment is that the Belarusian people were not present at the All-Belarusian People’s Assembly. The expert said that officials of all stripes gathered at the forum to discuss the main problem of Alexander Lukashenko – how to retain power.
