Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy traveled to Qatar amid the escalating conflict in Donbass.
In late March – early April, the situation in southeastern Ukraine worsened. The head of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) Denis Pushilin announced an increase in the number of shelling from Kiev. According to him, the authorities continue to pull people and military equipment to the line of contact.
As the conflict escalated, the Ukrainian president visited Qatar. Political analyst Alexander Bulavin noted that the Ukrainians reacted badly to the departure of the head of state. “Everyone understands perfectly well that Zelensky is just playing the fool and wasting time for something that is not clear,” the expert said.
To smooth the impression and raise his rating, the politician decided to visit Donbass. Zelenskiy visited the front lines and spoke with the military. Bulavin doubted that the president’s visit could really affect the conflict in southeastern Ukraine.
In a commentary to PolitNavigator, the expert emphasized that Volodymyr Zelensky’s trips to the war zone are rare and spontaneous. Bulavin added that the situation in Donbass is developing on its own, the president cannot stop it or, conversely, kindle it.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that joining NATO would put an end to the conflict in the southeast of the country. The politician blamed Russia for the aggravation of the situation and called on the countries participating in the Alliance to expand their presence in the Black Sea region.
