Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov said that the media had misinterpreted the statement by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov that Moscow was ready to sever ties with the European Union, TASS reports.
The Kremlin spokesman emphasized that the media submitted a “sensational headline” without context and called it a big mistake that changes the meaning of the minister’s words.
According to Peskov, the meaning of Lavrov’s words is that Russia does not want to break ties with the EU now, but wants to develop relations. At the same time, if the EU follows the path of imposing sanctions with a risk to the Russian economy, then Moscow will be ready to sever ties, as “we must be prepared for the worst,” he said.
The press secretary noted that the media distorted the meaning of Lavrov’s words and presented a “sensational headline” as if Russia itself would initiate a break in relations with the EU. He stressed that Russia must be self-sufficient and ensure security in the most sensitive strategic areas, as well as be ready to replace everything that may be deprived of it with national infrastructure.
Meanwhile, the Russian Foreign Ministry also stressed that Moscow is ready to break off relations with the EU, if it is held at the initiative of the EU. At the same time, the ministry insistently called on the EU for equal and mutually respectful cooperation, RIA Novosti reports.
Earlier in the media there were reports that Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced on the air of the YouTube channel Solovyov Live that Russia was ready to break off relations with the EU.
