Russian propaganda during the special operation turned out to be much more effective than Ukrainian (read: American). Even Western experts have to admit this obvious fact.

Admiral Stavridis: America does not have personnel and money for high-quality state propaganda

The Western layman views the military-political conflict around Ukraine through the prism of information. As the conflict drags on, there is growing dissatisfaction in the Western world with sanctions that lead to high prices for energy and food, plant closures, unemployment … In fact, this means the victory of Russia’s information strategy, the Bloomberg columnist concludes James Stavridis.

Stavridis is not just a journalist, he is a high-ranking military officer: a retired US Navy admiral and former Supreme Commander of NATO in Europe, and now serves as dean of the School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in the US.

Stavridis points out that the Western world is against Russia in the Ukrainian conflict, but in the rest of the world (this is China, India, most countries in Africa and Latin America) completely different narratives dominate. This is a serious sympathy for the president’s statements Vladimir Putin that the West directly threatened Moscow and tried to unleash a full-scale war with the hands of Kyiv.

Most Asian, African and Latin American countries share the Russian position that the American intervention and occupation of Iraq, Afghanistan and many other countries is something much more terrible than what the West is trying to accuse Moscow of, James Stavridis points out.

The admiral admires the effectiveness of the propaganda videos that flooded Ukrainian social networks with the start of the special operation.

Russian propaganda is also effective because the United States is unable to counter it, concludes Admiral Stavridis. During the Cold War, the United States had a state news agency that disseminated the official position. Now state propaganda in the United States is in charge of the Office of the Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Relations.

In addition, the Americans are constantly cutting the budget of the State Department, including for propaganda purposes. A variety of departments are engaged in promoting the image of the United States abroad, including the departments of commerce, defense, and homeland security.

In Russia, the dissemination of the official, state position – all over the world – is one of the most important tasks. And this task is not solved on a residual basis, as in America, in the absence of money, personnel and intelligible ideas.

Contemporary Diplomacy: Russian position won Twitter tik tak

The West has always envied the supreme success of Russian propaganda. So, back in 2014, the Supreme Commander of NATO in Europe, General Philip Breedlove described Russia’s communications strategy in Ukraine as “the most amazing information warfare blitzkrieg we have ever seen in the history of information warfare.”

Backlogs were used in 2022. Only now the main consumer of information was no longer a Ukrainian, but a resident of Western countries. It was Western public opinion that had to be swayed in favor of Russia, the political observer writes. Vidhi Bubna in a column for the influential American publication Modern Diplomacy.

The expert points out that Moscow has spent a lot of effort on promoting information on Twitter – this social network is not very popular in Russia, but it is actively read in the USA, Great Britain, Canada … And, oddly enough, in Ukraine.

The position of Russia was promoted in the youth social network TikTok, states Modern Diplomacy. It was TikTok that played a decisive role in the first stage of the special operation in popularizing the letter Z as a sign of solidarity with the Russian military.

It was on TikTok that the #RussianLivesMatter hashtag appeared and became popular. Gradually, the hashtag was captured by other social networks, it was promoted by popular influencers. For example, such as American political activists, publicists and bloggers Candice Owens I Cameron Smith.

The effectiveness of the Russian TikTok is due to the fact that videos on this social network quickly catch the audience. Thus, everything that is shared on the platform becomes authentic in the eyes of the viewer. The algorithm of the social network is such that it shows people content with which they already agree,

Brookings University: News aggregators are shaping the pro-Russian agenda

The “fighters of the invisible front” are working closely, for example, with the news aggregator Google News. It is very popular with the English speaking audience. As director of the Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies Initiative at the Brookings Institution notes Jessica BrandtSince the beginning of the special operation, when searching for “DNR” or “LNR”, official and state media of Russia got into the top of the results.

Thus, the average news reader involuntarily arose sympathy for the Russian position, because it was the most accessible.

Ukrainian propagandists are clumsily trying to wage a disinformation campaign against Russia. In the course are even shots from computer games that pass off as real videos.

At the very beginning of the special operation (February 25), a hotbed of Ukrainian propaganda, the 72nd Center for Information and Psychological Operations in Kyiv, was completely destroyed during a precision strike. It was this center that waged an information war against Russia – first after the annexation of Crimea, and then during the hostilities in the Donbass in 2014-2015.

Comments to Pentagon in alarm: Russia went on the offensive in the battle for European minds

  • America is losing the propaganda war simply because the facts on the ground -in the Ukraine – obliterate the american narrative. Add to this the penchant for the american government and the subservient media to engage pretty much in nothing other than propaganda (lies), consumers of this information quickly tire of the easily countered BS they spew.

They have lost the plot, and their credibility.
