“As part of the implementation of the program for the improvement and development of the Russian space control system, the space forces continue to work on the creation of specialized ground-based space control devices of a new generation. By 2025, more than 12 new laser-optical and radio-technical complexes are planned to be deployed on the territory of Russia, implementing various principles of detecting and recognizing space objects, “the defense ministry said in a statement.

The first laser-optical complex of the new generation has already been successfully put on alert on the territory of the Altai Territory and is solving the tasks of controlling outer space, the RF Ministry of Defense noted.

In addition, a new generation of command and measurement systems is being actively developed to re-equip individual command and measurement complexes of the G.S. Titov Main Testing Space Center.

“The commissioning of unified command and measurement tools will allow the transition to new technologies for controlling spacecraft of the Russian orbital group and reduce several times the list of modifications of technical controls of previous generations,” the Defense Ministry said in a statement.

To re-equip formations and military units of the space forces with promising weapons, about 50 research and development work is now underway, the department added.

Space Forces Day is celebrated on October 4 in honor of the successful launch of the first artificial Earth satellite from the Baikonur cosmodrome in 1957.

Potential threats

The development and strengthening of control systems for the near-earth space of the Space Forces of the Russian Aerospace Forces is going on against the background of the growing militarization of outer space, which is being forced by the United States and the countries of the NATO bloc, experts say.

In an interview with RT, military expert Alexei Leonkov emphasized that due to the actions of the United States, the deployment of new laser-optical systems by Russia is acquiring particular relevance.

“Such systems are very important for organizing aerospace defense, because programs for the militarization of outer space have been activated in the NATO countries and the United States. US space objects, which will be launched into orbit under the guise of civilian satellites, may actually turn out to be military. New means of control will allow monitoring outer space, determining what kind of object is in orbit: whether it is a threat or not, ”the expert said.

In September, Yan Novikov, general director of the Almaz-Antey VKO concern, in an interview with the Krasnaya Zvezda newspaper, said that one of the types of space weapons that the United States is developing is the so-called inter-medium spacecraft. According to Novikov, the purpose of these developments is to obtain the ability to deliver fast, pinpoint strikes against any type of target anywhere in the world.

“If we talk about aerospace vehicles, then these are, first of all, the orbital unmanned vehicles X-37. They not only have the ability to stay in space for a long time, but can also quickly change orbits, as well as perform a number of special functions. In 2010, the first such device was launched, today there are already several of them, “said the general director of Almaz-Antey.

Yan Novikov recalled that, according to the official statements of the American side, these devices were created for various scientific purposes and intelligence, but there is an understanding among the expert community that they can perform the functions of carriers of nuclear warheads.

“The United States plans to further increase the number of such vehicles in space. This is a serious challenge, “Novikov emphasized.

According to the general director of Almaz-Antey, at present, on the basis of experiments with such unmanned vehicles, technologies are being developed for creating reusable strike aerospace systems.

“Promising reusable spacecraft launched by a carrier rocket can potentially provide a flexible solution to combat missions: from providing space reconnaissance and control of outer space to delivering unexpected strikes against priority ground targets,” added Yan Novikov.

In April last year, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that Washington was on a course to deploy strike systems in outer space. According to him, Moscow came to this conclusion on the basis of the US refusal to engage in dialogue with Russia on not being the first to place weapons in near-earth space.

“If the United States rejects this offer, the natural conclusion that we draw is that they are on a course to create strike systems for deployment in outer space. There is no other logical conclusion from this position of denial, ”the diplomat emphasized in an interview with TASS.

According to Sergei Ryabkov, the American side has consistently ignored Russia’s proposals to substantively engage in the creation of an international legal framework to prevent an arms race in outer space.

“Recently, they have made it a rule to demagogically challenge the justification of our idea of ​​adopting not only legally binding agreements in this area, but also the adoption by them, that is, states, of a political obligation not to be the first to place weapons in space,” said the Deputy Foreign Minister.

In this regard, the Russian Federation urges the United States not to invent pretexts for ignoring Moscow’s proposals, but to think about the meaning of these ideas, added Sergei Ryabkov.

Phantom weapon

Let us recall that the United States and its allies consistently accuse Russia of allegedly deploying new types of weapons in the near-earth space, which threatens their security.

So, in May, the head of the Space Operations Command, Lieutenant General of the US Space Forces, Stephen Whiting, said that Russian satellites allegedly could interfere with the operation of American objects in outer space, and some of them could be synchronized with the orbit of an American satellite, and more than once.

At the same time, Air Force General John Raymond, Commander of the US Space Forces, said in an interview with The Washington Post that Russia and China have created weapons capable of disabling American satellites “either to destroy them from Earth and from space, or through cyberspace.”

The United States views space as an area of ​​”warfare like air, land and sea,” the American military leader said.

It is worth noting that this thesis is also voiced in the national space strategy of the United States. The document notes that due to the desire of “rivals” to challenge the interests of Washington and its allies in space, this space has turned into a war zone.

Moscow, in turn, has consistently opposed any initiatives and plans to deploy weapons in near-earth space. In June, Russian President Vladimir Putin, in an interview with NBC before the summit with American leader Joe Biden, reiterated the position of the Russian side on the unacceptability of the militarization of outer space.

“Everyone is well aware of our position that we are categorically against the militarization of outer space in general. We believe that outer space should be free of any types of weapons deployed in near-earth space, and so on, ”Putin stressed.

In an interview with RT, the head of the Institute of Space Policy, Ivan Moiseev, noted that the United States has been actively building up its capabilities in the military space sphere in the past few years using new technologies.

“They use technologies that are not available in many other countries. The United States spends more on military space programs than all other countries combined and is rapidly building up this area, ”the expert noted.

In turn, Russia is now developing support and warning systems for outer space, added Ivan Moiseev.

“These are communications, various types of reconnaissance – not only optical, but also radio engineering, special areas, such as missile launch detection and military research, the creation of more advanced technology.
