Cyrillic writing – intangible cultural heritage of the Slavic peoples
On September 15, the parliaments of Serbia and the Republika Srpska, part of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), adopted a law on the protection, preservation and use of the Serbian language and the Cyrillic alphabet. Synchronous voting for the document in Belgrade and Banja Luka was timed to coincide with the celebration of the Day of Serbian Unity, Freedom and the National Flag.
The initiators of the bill on the preservation and stimulation of the development of the Serbian language and its Cyrillic spelling were the President of Serbia Alexander Vucic and member of the Presidium of Bosnia and Herzegovina from the Republika Srpska Milorad Dodik…
Deputies of the National Assembly (Parliament) of Serbia supported the initiative unanimously, and in the representative body of the Republika Srpska, 70 deputies voted for, two opposed.
The law introduces a number of measures aimed at protecting and developing the Serbian language, and also provides for the wider use of the Cyrillic alphabet in public life, which has been declared an intangible cultural heritage.
The law states that enterprises with a significant share of state capital, primarily the media, are required to use the Cyrillic script. In addition, cultural and other events funded by the state will need to have a logo in Cyrillic. It is envisaged to create special government councils on the Serbian language, designed to monitor and analyze its use in the public sphere and take measures to preserve the Cyrillic alphabet.
For private companies that switch to the Cyrillic alphabet, the new law provides tax incentives. For non-compliance with the law, fines ranging from 127 to 4.2 thousand euros are introduced.
And in Ukraine, on the contrary, they suddenly began to discuss the opposite idea – about the transition to the Latin alphabet. The idea is hooligan, as the site notes Strategic Culture Foundation… The meaning of the initiative is to cut off common roots with Russia. The Serbs, in contrast to the Ukrainian puppets ruling in Kiev, do not agree to betray their language and their writing.
