The main issue is not the election results, but the opposition’s reaction to these results.
Regular elections were held in Georgia – the second round of elections to local self-government bodies in five cities (Tbilisi, Batumi, Rustavi, Poti and Kutaisi) and in 15 districts. In the first round, representatives of the ruling Georgian Dream party won in most municipalities.
For the first time in Georgia, elections were held at a time when the third president of the country has been in prison for a month. Mikhail Saakashviliwho went on a hunger strike from the first day of imprisonment. The doctors’ opinion was divided – the attending physician Saakashvili announced the critical condition of the “prisoner”, and the state medical commission, created by order of the government, assures that nothing threatens the life of the ex-president.
On the eve of the elections, rallies of both the ruling party and the opposition party, the United National Movement (UNM), were held throughout the country.
On the morning of election day, the chairman of the Georgian Dream party Irakli Kobakhidze warned – there is information that it is on this day that Saakashvili is planning to stage a sharp deterioration in his condition.
“As for Saakashvili and his simulated hunger strike. We have such information that today, on election day, he is faking a deterioration in health. That is, it will simulate in order to evoke some emotions from supporters. Whatever simulation Saakashvili conducts today, it will not be crowned with success. A person who has declared a hunger strike is responsible for the hunger strike ”,
– Irakli Kobakhidze told reporters.
And on the outer perimeter of the Rustavi penitentiary institution No. 12, where Saakashvili is kept, special forces and an ambulance were posted for security purposes – on the eve, the State Security Service (SGB) of Georgia announced the disclosure of a plan to intercept and release the ex-president during his transfer to the hospital after simulating a sharp deterioration.
Also, the State Security Service issued a statement on the preparation of a coup d’etat by Saakashvili’s supporters.
“The Georgian State Security Service is investigating the fact of the mutiny with the aim of overthrowing and seizing state power … According to the evidence obtained during the investigation, it was established that the defendants in the case planned destructive actions during the transfer of convicted Mikhail Saakashvili to the hospital – blocking roads, creating an uncontrollable situation and chaos to kidnap the ex-president “,
– announced the Deputy Head of the Counter-Terrorism Center of the State Security Service of Georgia Bacha Mgeladze…
Part of a two-hour audio recording was presented as evidence, in which UNM representatives discuss the details of the plan.
According to Mgeladze, a criminal case has already been initiated under the first part of Article 315 of the Criminal Code of Georgia “Conspiracy to forcibly change the constitutional order, overthrow or seize state power in Georgia”…
By Saturday evening, according to preliminary data, Georgian Dream candidates are winning in 18 out of 20 municipalities.
“According to our data, we can safely say that our candidates are firmly winning elections in 18 out of 20 municipalities. The National Movement candidates in two municipalities approached 50%. I call on the National Movement and the representatives of the media belonging to it to refrain from provocative actions, not to try to raise a storm in a glass, to give activists an opportunity to work, and voters to make their choice in a calm atmosphere ”,
– Irakli Kobakhidze told journalists on Saturday evening.
However, the outcome of the second round of elections was predictable from the very beginning, so the main issue remains not the outcome of the elections, but the reaction to these outcomes of the opposition. It is unlikely that they will calmly accept another defeat. At least Mikheil Saakashvili will take care of this from prison.
