On the border of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan – an armed conflict

The prime ministers of the two countries agreed on an armistice, but the tense situation remains

On April 28, Tajik border guards installed CCTV cameras near the water distribution point on the border with Kyrgyzstan. The sides have not been able to share the water intake of the “Golovnaya” for a long time – each country considers it its own. The Kyrgyz border guards did not like the CCTV cameras and asked to dismantle them. On the Tajik side, they refused, arguing that the water intake is located in the primordially Tajik territory occupied by Kyrgyzstan. This dispute became the beginning of armed clashes on the border of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.

And if on April 28 it was just a fight, then the next day the sides began to pull military equipment to the place of the conflict after the Tajiks fired at passing Kyrgyz cars across the border and the first wounded appeared.

On Thursday afternoon, the State Committee for National Security (GKNB) of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan reported a massive shelling from mortars, machine guns and automatic weapons at the Golovnoy water intake in the village of Kok-Tash, Batken region.

“The first deputy head of the State Committee for National Security of the Kyrgyz Republic, Ularbek Sharsheev, is on the spot, coordinating the situation and taking measures to localize the armed border conflict provoked by Tajik border guards,”

– reports the State Committee for National Security of the Kyrgyz Republic.

In three rural districts of Batken oblast, an emergency regime was introduced with the evacuation of local residents from the conflict zone.

According to the head of the region Omurbek SuvanalievaAfter the first skirmishes, the situation began to stabilize, negotiations took place and, it would seem, the conflict was settled. However, suddenly it flared up with renewed vigor. Suvanaliev speaks of the intervention of “certain forces”, without specifying what forces are in question, noting only that there are forces interested in aggravating the situation on the border.

By Thursday evening, Kyrgyz special forces captured a Tajik border post after Tajik border guards opened fire on three Kyrgyz border posts and two border posts. The captured frontier post was burned.

In the course of the clashes, there are dead, the number of wounded in the tens.

President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov appealed to the citizens of the country with an appeal to remain calm:

“I urge all residents of Kyrgyzstan, first of all, political forces and the media, to remain calm, not to succumb to provocations, not to incite hostility and discord. We with Tajik brothers will always find a common language, and we will resolve all issues taking into account good neighborly interests and harmony in our ancient land. Those who are trying to ignite the conflict from within are now dangerous. I call on all internal political forces to restrain themselves at such a difficult moment for the country. “

On Thursday evening, the prime ministers of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan held talks in Kazan, where they took part in a meeting of the heads of government of the EAEU.

“The parties expressed their full readiness to resolve the conflict situation on the border of the two republics as soon as possible through negotiations. The prime ministers believe that the use of force methods is unacceptable in resolving border issues, and voiced the need to take urgent measures to prevent further escalation of the conflict, “

– the message says.

And the heads of the foreign ministries of the two countries agreed on a complete ceasefire from 20:00 on Thursday and the withdrawal of military and equipment to the places of their previous deployment, the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic reported.

However, houses in border villages on both sides of the border continued to burn at that time, only in Kyrgyzstan on Thursday evening 44 people were hospitalized with injuries of varying severity.
