The NATO member state Norway, which borders the Russian Federation, has entered into an agreement with the United States, according to which US troops will be able to build the necessary infrastructure at three Norwegian airfields and one naval base, as well as stay on Norwegian territory “under a simplified procedure” when conducting joint exercises and in the event of a crisis or armed conflict.
“Cooperation with our allies is constantly evolving. The agreement confirms the close relationship between Norway and the United States and underlines Norway’s key position on NATO’s northern flank, ”
– said the head of the Norwegian Foreign Ministry Ine Sereide… At the same time, she added that Oslo’s opinion on the issue of the deployment of foreign troops and warehouses with nuclear weapons has remained unchanged since 1949, when the Norwegian authorities called the refusal to admit foreign units and nuclear weapons into the country as a condition for Norway’s NATO membership.
In fact, however, with a new agreement with the United States, Norway moved away from the ban on the presence of foreign military personnel on its territory, without formally canceling the legislative norm of 1949.
Norway sees Russia as a competitor in the Arctic. The Norwegian-American agreement is aimed at strengthening NATO’s military presence in the region to the detriment of Russia’s interests. As a reminder, the Norwegian authorities have recently blocked the sale by the British company Rolls-Royce of the Norwegian manufacturer of ship engines. Bergen engines Russian concern “Transmashholding”.
