On March 27, a concert of the rock band Love of Lesbian took place at the Barcelona sports arena, which attracted 5 thousand spectators. All participants had to pass a rapid test for SARS-CoV-2 antigen and wear masks eight hours before the start of the event. Of course, there was no question of maintaining social distance.
The concert was part of a pilot study being conducted by a group of scientists from the Germans Trias i Pujol Hospital, El Pais reported. According to experts, mass testing of viewers revealed only six cases of infection. Further morbidity analysis showed that SARS-CoV-2 was confirmed in four attendees after the concert, but it is unlikely that these people became infected during the event.
Representatives of the concert industry reacted to the results of the study with great optimism, but doubted whether organizers of events in small venues, for example, in clubs, would be able to afford mass testing of participants. Again, if we are talking about large festivals, it will not be easy to test among tens of thousands of people in eight hours and process the results.
“Health authorities should establish protocols for this type of activity, which will clearly state where participants can be tested, during what period and with what restrictions,” the authors of the study emphasized.
Last year, a group of scientists from Germany conducted a study at an experimental pop concert at the Leipzig Arena to determine the likelihood of contracting the coronavirus. For this, several behaviors of the concert participants were modeled. The volunteers were divided into three groups: some had to strictly observe social distance, others with indulgences, and others not at all. All participants were wearing respirators and provided with fluorescent disinfectants and special means to control the spread of aerosol droplets and air circulation.
For 10 hours, the participants moved around the concert hall, visited the buffet and toilets. According to the results of the study, scientists estimated the likelihood of the spread of coronavirus at such an event from “low” to “very low” if the organizers provide all the necessary security measures. Namely: high-quality ventilation, limited capacity, the ability to enter the hall through several exits.
