New clashes between protesters and police in Spain

Protests by residents of Spain against the arrest of rapper Pablo Asel escalated the riots again; on the fifth day of protests, police detained more than 30 demonstrators.

The relevant data are provided by Catalan law enforcement officers on their Twitter page. It is known that most of the arrests are in Barcelona – 31 people, two more in Tarragona and one in Lleida.

“A total of 34 people were arrested for incidents of riot and robbery,” the report said.

We will remind, the arrest and imprisonment of Catalan rapper Pablo Asel caused a wave of protests in several Spanish cities, which have not stopped since Tuesday, February 16. The musician received nine months in prison, he is serving a sentence on charges of glorifying terrorism, insulting the monarchy and state institutions.

Demonstrators, demanding the release of the artist, are building barricades, burning garbage containers, throwing stones and bottles at police officers, and also smashing shop windows and robbing. Street unrest has engulfed Tarragona, Sabadell and Valencia, among others.

The European Union previously supported peaceful protests in Spain, noting that the state should ensure the possibility of such actions.
