The resolution adopted by the European Parliament on Thursday calls for the need to envisage sanctions against Russia in case Moscow continues to support Belarus.
MEPs were concerned about the alliance between Russia and Belarus. In the EP resolution, the presidents of both states are warned against intentions for greater integration.
The document says that the EP “condemns the ongoing negotiations between Alexander Lukashenko and Vladimir Putin on the preparation of roadmaps for greater integration between Belarus and Russia.”
In addition, European politicians recommend to envisage the possibility of introducing additional sanctions against Russia for supporting Minsk.
The deputies also consider it necessary for the EU institutions to periodically report to parliamentarians about “the situation with Moscow’s intervention in Belarus, including its methods of gaining deeper political, military and economic control over Belarus.”
