NATO will maintain military presence in Lithuania

American Ambassador: “We will see more and more US presence in Lithuania, not less”

United States Ambassador to Lithuania Robert Gilchrist spoke on Friday, January 22, at a press conference, promising to maintain the US military presence in the Baltics, and in various forms. He also guaranteed that further relations between Vilnius and Washington will remain “as strong as today.”

“Cooperation between Lithuania and the United States in the field of defense and security is very strong, as evidenced by the fact that this is the third time that an American military battalion is deployed in the country. I really hope that in the future the situation will not change and we will see more and more US presence in Lithuania, not less, ”

– the newspaper “Lithuanian Courier” quotes Gilchrist.

However, at present, the American military is stationed in Lithuania on a temporary basis, while in Vilnius they want to – on a permanent basis. But the ambassador could not promise that during the presidency Joe Biden the parties will be able to come to an agreement on the permanent military presence of a certain American contingent in the country. However, the new government of Lithuania has already included in its program an item on the need to seek such an agreement.

“Whether such an agreement on a permanent military presence is reached, I think, depends on how everything will develop in the future,”

– the ambassador answered vaguely, but immediately reassured him: Washington is well aware of what security challenges not only Lithuania, but all the Baltic countries have to face, the new president’s team has a group of specialists who understand the Baltic specifics. I wonder who is threatening the Baltics?

“The United States has a strong commitment to the security and defense of this region. Therefore, we will always be present here in various forms, because the security of the Baltics was, is and will be a priority for the United States, ”

– promised Robert Gilchrist.

At the end of the press conference, the ambassador promised to make every effort to ensure that Joe Biden visited Lithuania, and if not the president himself, then some of the high-ranking officials.

“I would be just happy if President D. Biden came here. Of course, it is too early to talk about it, but I can promise that I will do my best ”,

– said the ambassador.
