The gastrocnemius soleus, although only 1% of body weight, can do great things to improve metabolism in the rest of the body if activated properly. Hamilton’s research, published in the journal iScience, suggests that the plantar push-up’s ability to support increased oxidative metabolism to improve blood glucose regulation is more effective than any of the popular methods currently touted as a solution, including exercise, weight loss. and intermittent fasting.

Oxidative metabolism is the process by which oxygen is used to burn metabolites such as glucose or fats in the blood, but it depends in part on the immediate energy needs of the muscle when it is working.

“We never dreamed that this muscle had such capabilities. It has always been inside our body, but no one has yet studied how to use it to optimize our health,” said Professor Hamilton. “When properly activated, the soleus muscle can elevate local oxidative metabolism to high levels within hours rather than minutes, and does so using a different fuel mixture.”

Muscle biopsy showed that the contribution of glycogen to plantar muscle nutrition was minimal. Instead of breaking down glycogen, the sole can use other fuels such as blood glucose and fats. Glycogen is usually the predominant type of carbohydrate providing muscle exercise.

Based on years of research, Hamilton and his colleagues developed the plantar push-up, which engages the plantar muscle differently than when standing or walking. Physical activity aims to ensure that the sole increases its oxygen consumption – more than is possible with other types of sole activity, while being resistant to fatigue.

“All 600 muscles combined typically provide only about 15% of the whole body’s oxidative metabolism within three hours of carbohydrate ingestion. Even though the plantar muscle makes up only 1% of body weight, it is able to increase the metabolic rate during SPU contractions, easily doubling and sometimes tripling carbohydrate oxidation throughout the body”
