Moldova did not let Russian peacekeeper into Transnistria

“From now on, there is a danger that the rotation of Russian peacekeepers will be difficult.”

Moldova denied entry to a Russian peacekeeping officer – lieutenant colonel O.A. Petrov, who was returning after treatment in Russia to his place of service in the Security Zone, while the Moldovan side did not give any explanation of the reasons for the refusal.

Recall that peace in the region is supported by joint peacekeeping forces, including the Russian military (402 people), Transnistrian (492) and Moldovan (355), as well as ten observers from neighboring Ukraine. There are 15 stationary posts and checkpoints in the Security Zone, where peacekeepers are on duty. According to the agreements, the peacekeepers must remain on the banks of the Dniester until the conflict is completely resolved.

The peacekeeping mission in Transnistria is considered one of the most successful – for 29 years there has been no hostilities in the region, although there are occasional attempts at provocations.

At a meeting of the Joint Control Commission (JCC) on Thursday, September 30, the Russian delegation made an official statement in which the incident was named “An unfriendly act that undermines the effectiveness of a peacekeeping operation”

“We regard this fact as an attempt to deprive the Russian side of its sovereign right to send servicemen to its peacekeeping contingent. We place the full responsibility for the consequences on the Moldovan side, ”

– the statement of the Russian delegation is quoted by the Novosti Pridnestrovya News Agency.

The statement also reminds that the Russian Federation is a signatory of the 1992 agreement “On the principles of peaceful settlement of the armed conflict in the Transnistrian region of the Republic of Moldova”, as well as the guarantor of the negotiation process.

“We understand very well that the main guaranteeing and connecting force within the peacekeeping forces is still the Russian component. And when a Russian serviceman with the rank of lieutenant colonel in command of an entire battalion is not allowed into the Security Zone solely for some internal reasons of the representatives of Moldova, there is a certain danger in the operation of the mechanism of the peacekeeping operation, ”

– noted the head of the Pridnestrovian delegation to the JCC Oleg Belyakov

In his opinion, from now on there is a real danger that the rotation of Russian military personnel will be difficult.

Coincidentally or not, but on the same day, a candidate for the post of the United States Ambassador to Chisinau Kent Doyle Logsdon stated that in the event that his candidacy is approved, he will exert all his efforts to achieve the withdrawal of Russian peacekeepers from Transnistria, urging to put pressure on Russia.
