Menstrual and lunar cycles are periodically synchronized

The lunar cycle and our reproduction

In many living organisms, reproduction behavior depends on the phases of the lunar cycle. Scientists believe that such a landmark helps to synchronize the behavior of individuals of different sexes and increases the chances of having offspring.

The fact that the duration of the female menstrual cycle is close to the duration of the lunar cycle is of interest to scientists. Previously, the authors of several studies have indicated that women whose menstrual cycle is close to the duration of the lunar cycle (29.5 days) may find it easier to become pregnant. In women, whose cycle length is 29.5 ± 1 day, menstruation often falls on the full moon. At a different length of the menstrual cycle, such a relationship was not found.

A possible connection between the birth rate and the phase of the moon is also known. According to long-term studies, on a full moon it increases by 2-3% compared to the average level, and on a new moon it decreases to the same extent.

Data on the relationship of human reproduction to the lunar cycle are limited. Modern scientists are usually skeptical about the likelihood of this connection.

Lunar cycles are different

Scientists point out that the very concept of “lunar cycle” is a simplification. In research, it is advisable to take into account the fact that lunar cycles are different. The synodic (normal) lunar month is associated with how the sun illuminates the moon, on average it lasts 29.53 days. The period of full revolution of the moon around the Earth is shorter – about 27.32 days. This period is called the tropical month. Another type of lunar cycle (anomalistic month) is associated with how often the moon approaches the planet at a minimum distance. It lasts 27.55 days. All of these cycles affect the intensity of moonlight and attraction in their own way.

Moonlight and gravity

To clarify the influence of the moon on human reproduction, the so-called. diaries of the menstrual cycle of 22 women. The longest observation period was 32 years. On average, women under 35 years of age menstruated on a full or new moon in only a quarter of the time. After 35 years, this figure dropped to a tenth of cases. Scientists believe that, apparently, the connection between the moon and menstruation weakens not only with age. It was less common among women who more often use artificial lighting (for example, among participants with the chronotype “owls”).

In this study, scientists presented for the first time evidence that lunar attraction can affect the menstrual cycle. In the second half of 1961, 1979, 1997, and 2015, the menstrual cycles of seven of the nine women whose diaries captured these years were synchronized with the synodic lunar cycle. This interval of 18 years clearly corresponds to the periodicity of lunar eclipses, at which the distance between the moon and the earth becomes minimal. At this time, the influences of all three lunar cycles are superimposed on each other.

The study authors suggest that lunar attraction may help explain why intermittent falling asleep and sleep duration also show a relationship with a full moon or new moon. In both phases, the lunar attraction on Earth is maximum. The action of gravity can also explain the influence of the moon on the inhabitants of cities where people rarely see moonlight.

Scientists acknowledge that there were relatively few participants in this study. They hope to do some big work with mobile apps in the future.
