Media: EU plans to expand sanctions against Minsk due to border crisis

The European Union may impose sanctions against 30 Belarusian individuals and legal entities, Reuters reports, citing sources in diplomatic circles.

According to the agency’s interlocutors, the list may include the head of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry Vladimir Makei and other officials. According to the EU, they “are responsible for the migration crisis on the borders of the republic with the countries of the community.” Also, restrictive measures may affect the Belavia company.

The EU plans to make a decision on new sanctions next week.

Earlier, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, called the statements of the West that the migration crisis on the border of Belarus and the European Union was a “hybrid operation” by the President of the Republic Alexander Lukashenko as a lie.

In her opinion, in this way Western countries are trying to avoid responsibility for what is happening.

We add that the military attaché at the Polish Embassy in Minsk was summoned to the Ministry of Defense of Belarus, where they informed about the groundlessness of accusations of the involvement of Belarusian servicemen in the crisis on the border of the two countries.

Let us remind you that thousands of migrants from Asian and African countries crossed the border of Belarus and gathered in front of the Polish barriers. When trying to break through, Polish troops used tear gas and opened fire.

It was also reported that the EU suspended the simplified visa regime for Belarusian officials. This was a response from European countries to the “ongoing hybrid attack” of the republic.
