President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko announced the failure of the opposition’s plans. The authorities held out in spite of the pressure.
The Belarusian leader said that today there is no complete unanimity in the administrative apparatus. According to Alexander Lukashenko, some officials “from under the plinth” followed the events of the past week, in particular, the protest actions timed to the Freedom Day.
The President stressed that the state will continue to strengthen, despite the intrigues of ill-wishers. Lukashenka called on doubting officials to “get out from under the plinth” and start working. “Get up in line and go!”, – the politician addressed them at the meeting.
On March 25, the Belarusian opposition traditionally celebrates Freedom Day or Independence Day. Hopes for a centralized protest this year did not materialize. Many supporters of former presidential candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya refused to take to the streets for fear of arrest.
Instead of a large-scale rally, Belarusians staged flash mobs and marches in the courtyards, some hung out white-red-white flags on the balconies. According to the Viasna human rights center, 118 oppositionists were detained last Thursday, 68 of them in Minsk.
Earlier, President Alexander Lukashenko called on the security officials to deal toughly with the opposition who take up arms. You can find out the details from this material.
