Vilnius suspects Latvia of readiness to buy Belarusian electricity
The war of the Lithuanian authorities against the Belarusian nuclear power plant, temporarily relegated to the background in connection with the events in Belarus, again becomes the main problem of Lithuania after Tikhanovskaya, the leader of the Belarusian opposition, left Vilnius.
Representatives of the conservative party Union of the Fatherland - Christian Democrats of Lithuania suspect that the agreement adopted by neighboring Latvia on a new methodology for electricity trading with neighboring countries will allow electricity from BelNPP to "leak" into the Lithuanian energy system, and from there - into the homes of Lithuanian citizens, which, according to the conservatives , is unacceptable.
Representatives of the conservative party "SO - HDL" sent an open letter to the President of the country Gitanasu Nauseda and the prime minister Saulus Felilis with the requirement to take action, and urgent. In addition, they demand to dismiss the Minister of Energy Sigismund Vaichiunaswho looks at this issue from the point of view of economics and does not see the problem. Conservatives, however, demand to approach the issue from the "ideological side".
Latvian transport system operator High voltage network published a draft methodology for electricity trading with third countries. In Riga, they did not hide that they would buy electricity from Russia, not really worrying about whether the electricity received at the BelNPP would get there, which was declared "wrong" in Vilnius.
However, the Lithuanian conservatives are not satisfied with how and from where the neighboring country will buy electricity, note - for their own money, and not for Lithuania's money. The main thing that does not suit Vilnius is Latvia's methodology for trade with third countries "There is nothing left of the political component of the issue"...
Previously, it was assumed that the methodology developed by Latvia would be adopted by all Baltic countries.
“The agreed draft methodology can be considered completely unacceptable for Lithuania. In the published draft methodology, we find more inappropriate provisions that actually legalize the import of electricity from Belarus to Lithuania and trade in it on the Lithuanian electricity market, which is strictly prohibited by the current anti-island law, ”
- it says in an address to President Nauseda.
Conservatives warn that this project "Damages the interests of Lithuania, since it assumes that electricity from Belarus can get through the Latvian trade zone to the Lithuanian market"... In addition, as a result, it will turn out that the citizens of Lithuania will pay for the Belarusian electricity.
The President is urged to join the conservative protest and not approve the project developed in Riga.
The Belarusian opposition is also ready to join the war, which Lithuania is actively waging against the Belarusian nuclear power plant, on the side of Vilnius. The Belarusian National Platform of the Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum has already made a demand to cancel or at least postpone the launch of the nuclear power plant "Due to the political crisis in the country and other factors"...
“The BelNPP reactor is being commissioned in a political crisis that makes it difficult or impossible for the emergency response services to adequately respond to emergency situations, including radiation accidents, the risk of which increases during commissioning”,
- said in a statement by the Civil Society Forum.
