The State Commission for the Lithuanian Language has officially renamed Georgia Sakartvelo, which is the country’s self-name, reports Sputnik Lithuania.
Previously, the name Gruzija was used in official documents.
The decision to rename Georgia to Sakartvelas on January 7 was made by the head of the commission Audris Antanaitis.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania proposed to call Georgia Sakartvelia in 2018. A similar appeal was received from the Georgian embassy in Vilnius.
