Lithuania decided to reconcile opposition and Georgian authorities

Member of the Seimas of Lithuania Zigimantas Pavilionis urgently sent to Tbilisi to reconcile the parties

After Thursday, February 18, the Prime Minister of Georgia Georgy Gakharia announced his resignation, the very next day the ruling Georgian Dream party presented a candidate for the post of head of government. It became Irakli Garibashviliwho previously held this post. The Political Council of the Georgian Dream unanimously approved his candidacy.

“Today a meeting of the political council of the party took place, at which a decision was made to nominate a candidate for the post of prime minister. On the basis of my presentation as the party chairman, the political council unanimously decided to nominate Irakli Garibashvili as a candidate for prime minister, “

– the chairman of the “Georgian Dream” told reporters Irakli Kobakhidze

And according to the speaker of parliament Archila Talakvadze, the composition of the government will be approved by parliament in the coming days, negotiations are already underway with candidates for the post of ministers.

Meanwhile, the “Western partners” expressed their concern over the Georgian events, calling for prudence and the search for a compromise, while not forgetting about “democratic values”.

“The US is deeply concerned about the political events unfolding in Georgia recently. We call on all parties to exercise restraint and avoid any action or rhetoric that could lead to an escalation of tension and violence. We call on the Georgian government to act in accordance with Euro-Atlantic aspirations. The United States supports a democratic, secure and successful Georgia, “

– said in a statement released by the US Department of State.

Similar statements were made by the European People’s Party (EPP), the US, EU and UK Embassies in Georgia and the UN Parliamentary Assembly. And the president of Georgia Salome Zurabishvili called for “Immediate de-escalation of the situation and relaxation of tension”… In her opinion, this can only be achieved at the negotiating table.

Lithuania did not limit itself to statements and its ambassador sent to help the opposition politician Nikanoru Melia, who is sitting out in the office of his party “United National Movement” – everyone is waiting for law enforcement officers to come to arrest the politician by court order. Member of the Seimas of Lithuania, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs left for Georgia on Friday Zygimantas Pavilionis… The official purpose of his visit is to “resolve the political crisis.” The decision to send the Pavilionis to Tbilisi was made on February 18 at an extraordinary meeting of the Lithuanian parliament, whose deputies decided that Georgia would not be able to resolve its internal conflict without their help. To do this, it was necessary to change the existing rules on the prohibition of foreign travel for members of the Seimas in connection with the coronavirus pandemic.

Pavilionis himself is confident that he will be able to act as a mediator and reconcile the parties – to do what the US and EU ambassadors failed to do.
