The motorcade of the Minister of the Interior of the Government of National Accord of Libya Fathi Bashagi was attacked in Tripoli, reports RIA News.

An agency source in the minister’s security service clarified that the incident occurred when the Interior Minister was returning to his residence in the Janzur region in western Tripoli.

According to the source, three armed people opened fire on the minister’s motorcade from a Toyota car. At the same time, one of the attackers was killed by security guards, two more were detained. Bashaga himself was not injured.

We will remind, in the west of Libya, the Government of National Accord formed with the support of the UN and the EU operates. He is opposed by the Libyan National Army, led by Marshal Khalifa Haftar, which cooperates with the parliament in the east of the country.

In early February, in Geneva, during a meeting of the Libyan Forum for Political Dialogue under the auspices of the UN, the Prime Minister of Libya and three members of the Presidential Council were elected. The head of the government became Abdel Hamid ad-Dbeiba.

UN Secretary General António Guterres called the election of the head of the Libyan transitional government a breakthrough on the way to resolving the situation in the country.
