Led Zeppelin – band history, facts, photos

Led Zeppelin (Russian Led Zeppelin) is a British rock band, founded in 1968 in London, and recognized as one of the most successful and influential in modern history. Having created their own sound, accompanied by piercing vocals, the band has become one of the leading groups of hard rock.

Led Zeppelin played a key role in the development of heavy metal, enriching this genre with elements of other musical styles. Today, this team is considered one of the most successful rock bands in world history. The total circulation of their albums exceeds 300 million copies.

Led Zeppelin is #1 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. According to Rolling Stone, the band is “the heaviest” and “best band of the 70s”.

The history of the creation and composition of Led Zeppelin

Led Zeppelin was formed in September 1968 in London. The ideological leader of the band was guitarist Jimmy Page. It is worth noting that Page until the very end remained the musical “brain” of this project. Before that, the guy was in the Yardbirds band, where he played bass guitar, and later began to masterfully play other types of guitars.

The original Led Zeppelin line-up consisted of Jimmy Page, bassist John Poah Jones, drummer John Bonham, and vocalist Robert Plant. An interesting fact is that the name “Led Zeppelin” is loosely translated as “lead airship”.

A few weeks after the founding of the group, Ahmet Ertegun, the owner of the Atlantic Records recording studio, offered his cooperation to the musicians. It is curious that Ahmet signed a contract with the team, never meeting with its members.

The rockers’ debut album, named after the band’s name, Led Zeppelin, was recorded in 1969 in just 30 hours. It had many messages on mythical and mystical themes. In addition, the music traced the trends of traditional rock and roll and blues.

The musicians themselves called the resulting genre “heavy blues”, which immediately received great recognition. Jimmy Page was constantly experimenting with sound, as a result of which he was able to become the author of a number of new studio effects.

In particular, Page came up with his famous “pre-echo”, which made this or that song completely different and unusual. After the release of the first disc, Led Zeppelin went on tour in the United States. Subsequently, this disc received the status of multi-platinum and made the musicians millionaires.

In the same year, the new album “Led Zeppelin II” was recorded, which received even greater popularity. It featured such hits as “Whole Lotta Love”, “Heartbreaker”, “Ramble On” and others. Critics unanimously stated that the songs of the British had a versatile and rich sound.

They perfectly combined Page’s virtuoso guitar parts, Plant’s screaming vocals, as well as Jones’s flamboyant bass guitar accompaniment and Bonham’s drums. It is noteworthy that Led Zeppelin deliberately refused to release individual singles.

Instead, the guys focused on volumetric records, as a result of which they became the founders of such a term as “album rock”. In 1970, the release of Led Zeppelin III was announced, inspired by Celtic motifs and acoustic melodies.

When “Led Zeppelin IV” was released the following year, the British were awarded the title of “Best Band of the 70s”. The circulation of this disc exceeded 37 million copies, as a result of which it turned out to be not only the most commercially successful album in the history of the group, but also one of the best-selling in world history.

The composition “Stairway to Heaven” present on it deserves special attention, which today is the most rotated piece of music, of any genre, on American radio and one of the most famous compositions in the history of music.

These discs received the unofficial nickname “Four Symbols”, since each participant created his own emblem for one of the records. By that time, the image of Led Zeppelin had already changed significantly: the musicians went on stage in luxurious and embroidered caftans.

Instead of touring vans, the group began to use a private jet, and instead of individual hotel rooms, they filmed entire sections. “Led Zeppelin” traveled to many countries on different continents. Each of their concerts was accompanied by a full house.

The media has repeatedly mentioned that the musicians use heroin. During a performance in Florida, British fans behaved so aggressively that law enforcement officers were forced to use tear gas. This incident was widely publicized, as a result of which the team decided to take a creative break.

In the period 1973-1975. Led Zeppelin recorded 2 albums – “Houses of the Holy” and “Physical Graffiti”. By that time, they already had their own music company, Swan Song. At the same time, the guys began filming the documentary “The Song Remains The Same”, which premiered in 1976.

Soon the rockers’ seventh album Presence was released, which received mixed reviews. Fans coldly accepted the depressing compositions of Led Zeppelin. The next couple of years turned out to be difficult for the band members who had drug addiction, as well as problems in their personal and musical biography.

In 1979, the team recorded a new disc “In Through The Out Door”. The following year, drummer John Bonham, who was drunk at the time of his death, died of pulmonary edema. Led Zeppelin decided to end their existence, not wanting to find a replacement for the deceased Bonham.

In the fall of 1982, the group released the 9th and last album “Coda”, which was a collection of songs recorded at different times. After the breakup of the group, each of its members continued their solo careers.

In 1994, Led Zeppelin took the stage again at the MTV Unplugged ceremony, after which they went on tour with the orchestra. Plant and Page even recorded an Oriental-influenced record called No Quater. And yet, each of the rockers continued to perform solo.

Page wrote soundtracks for films, Jones was engaged in production, and Plant recorded the record “Dreamland”, consisting of cover versions. In 2003, Led Zeppelin returned to prominence again with the release of the triple live album How the West Was Won.

At the end of 2007, Led Zeppelin participated in a charity concert, the proceeds of which were transferred to Ertegun’s Education Fund. This foundation provides support to students of music institutions in the UK, USA and Turkey.

In 2014, the biography “Led Zeppelin” – “When the titans walked the earth” – was published. The 750-page book described the history of the group, which was accompanied by various interesting facts and comments.
