Cooperation within the Barents Euro-Arctic Council (BEAC) remains an important channel of dialogue for its member countries. This was announced by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during the 18th ministerial session of the BEAC, reports TASS.
According to the head of the department, within the BEAC, its participating countries can discuss issues important for the region in a business and constructive manner, which is not subject to fluctuations in the political environment.
Lavrov noted that the efforts of the Nenets Autonomous Okrug (NAO) in the role of chairman of the Barents Regional Council (BRS) will be aimed at developing and increasing coordination of cooperation.
“Yesterday the baton of the BRS leadership passed from the Swedish province of Västerbotten to the Nenets Autonomous Okrug. I am confident that the efforts of the Nenets chairmanship will be aimed at deepening our common cooperation. We are considering the chairmanship of the NAO in conjunction with preparations for the Russian chairmanship in the BEAC in 2023-2025, ”he said.
The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry drew attention to the increased internal coordination within the framework of the “two-story structure” of the Barents cooperation. He stressed that many proposals for its development appear at the level of administrative-territorial entities. There, according to Lavrov, the real needs and interests of people are best felt.
Earlier, Sergei Lavrov said that relations between Russia and NATO cannot be called catastrophic, because they simply do not exist. The head of the department drew attention to the fact that the North Atlantic Alliance is not a friend of the Russian Federation. Moreover, he sees Russia and China as a threat.
