Armin Laschet, the new chairman of Germany’s ruling CDU party, who is supposed to replace Angela Merkel as German Chancellor, sees no reason to lift EU sanctions against Russia.
The politician stated this in an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
Laschet noted that mainly sanctions against Russia were imposed due to reunification with Crimea, while others relate to the conflict in the Donbass and the implementation of the Minsk agreements.
“As for the Minsk agreements, I would like to see more progress. In this regard, there is no reason to lift the sanctions now, ”added the head of the Christian Democratic Union.
Earlier, German political scientist Alexander Rahr said that Laschet is the most reliable candidate from the point of view of normalizing Russian-German relations.
