The Moscow principality “appropriated” all three heroes: Ilya Muromets, Dobrynya Nikitich and Alyosha Popovich. This is the conclusion reached by Ukrainian historians.
Kiev historians reproached the Moscow principality of “appropriating” three heroes
In Kiev, it is believed that the three heroes were Ukrainians. Historians and philologists claim that Ilya Muromets was actually called Ilya Chobitko and he was from the village of Morovsk near Chernigov, and not from the village of Karacharovo near Murom.
Hero Alyosha Popovich, as Ukrainian experts think, was called Oleshko, and Popovich was born in Poltava region. The historians did not change the name of Dobrynya Nikitich, but only indicated that he “lived on the territory of Kievan Rus within the modern ethnic Ukraine.”
