Hungary and Ukraine may start joint work on the language issue

Hungary offered Ukraine to start joint work on the language law, which aggravated relations between the two countries.

This was stated by the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry Peter Siyjarto at a press conference in Kiev with his Ukrainian counterpart Dmitry Kuleba.

Siyarto also said that it is proposed to create a working group that will determine how to implement the law on education, TASS reports.

Tension in relations between the two countries arose against the background of Ukraine’s adoption of a law that significantly reduces the possibility of teaching in the languages of national minorities, including Russian and Hungarian. It began operating in September 2017.

In early December, the Hungarian ambassador to Kiev, Istvan Idyarto, said that the Hungarian community was feeling pressure from the Ukrainian authorities.

The statement came after several deputies of the rural community in the Transcarpathian region sang the Hungarian anthem during the swearing-in. Check on this fact started the SBU.
