Are you sure that the maintenance of a green lawn is one of the most expensive items in the country budget? Wrong! A lawn can be beautiful and at the same time easy on the wallet. A well-organized lawn is not only a spectacular landscape, but also the “lungs” of a summer cottage, which are responsible for the general microclimate of the territory and regulate the humidity of the air and soil.
However, this is not the only advantage of a silky object. In addition to aesthetic qualities, he also has very utilitarian abilities, not at all superfluous in country life:
- On the one hand, it prevents the soil from “spreading” and interferes with the growth of weeds, since the grasses that make up the lawn form a powerful turf, which is extremely difficult for green invaders to break through.
- On the other hand, it combines all the elements of the dacha kingdom into a single whole, focuses attention on their shapes and colors, and also advantageously sets off unusual objects.
Well, now the best part: the lawn can not be ruinous at all and bring joy, not losses! True, not everyone. And today we will talk about the most economical options.
This is the golden mean, which is ideal for the vast majority of summer cottages. An ordinary lawn will pleasantly diversify the interior of any site, regardless of the style of its design.
Compared to the classic parterre, it is a little less elegant, but it can withstand trampling, is more resistant to weed attacks and weather disasters. Such a lawn is usually grown from cereal grasses (perennial ryegrass, various types of fescue and bent grass). The cost of such a grass mixture is quite budgetary, besides, you can sow a lawn and take care of it without outside help.
An even more affordable option, it exists on its own and practically does not need your “services”. The only thing that is required is to form it by frequent mowing, then even the weeds will stop “getting out of order” and join the general green mass.
Natural lawn is the best suited for the corners of the site, where the human foot steps often and with pleasure. For example, such as this cozy area for family tea parties.
If you wish, you can combine the useful with the pleasant: “roll out” an ordinary lawn in the most prominent areas, and leave inconvenient and hard-to-reach corners and the territory of the orchard for the natural one. But be prepared for the fact that you still have to mow this beauty.
Does the thought of mowing your lawn cause bouts of depression? Do not rush to fall into despair: there are quite spectacular varieties of lawn that practically do not need this procedure. Perhaps one of them will be the best for you.
The meadow lawn demonstrates real natural forbs. But do not flatter yourself: in fact, everything here is clearly “staged”. The lawn mixture is made up of various cereals (this is the basis of your carpet), legumes and meadow plants (this is primarily creeping clover, yarrow, chamomile, loosestrife and perennial daisy).
Meadow lawn is ideal for almost any suburban area, regardless of the style of territory design. And all because, on the one hand, it becomes a winning backdrop for all kinds of summer cottages and “notions”, and on the other, it is distinguished by all-season. But it will still have to be mowed, however, once or twice a season – solely in order to provoke the further development of the grass cover.
Mauritanian lawn is a mixture of grasses and vibrant wildflowers. You can read about its pros and cons in the article Unusual lawns.
How is it different from meadow?
- Firstly, only low-growing cereals are used here, and there are fewer of them than flowers.
- Secondly, it is flowers (and very bright ones, too!), and not some ornamental leafy plants, that play the main role here, and the vast majority of these “artists” are annuals.
Important: plants are selected based on the timing of flowering (according to the principle of “changing of the guard”, where some “soldiers” change others), this allows you to create an object that is bright throughout the summer season.
The composition of the flower mixture usually includes poppy-seed, large-flowered flax (blue and red), mattiola two-horned, cornflower, escholcia, calendula. Such a “carpet” looks especially stylish in small areas.
It is the Moorish lawn that is distinguished by its maximum decorativeness, but you won’t be able to walk along it – the flowers don’t like this. A nice bonus: you don’t have to mow such a lawn at all.
Non-grass lawn is grown from perennial ground cover plants, ornamental or wild. The effect is amazing, but in order to achieve it, you need to be able to wait and … work. On the one hand, the vast majority of “candidates” are distinguished not only by beautiful flowering, but also by a pleasant aroma. On the other hand, for the device of such a lawn, seedlings and the time that perennials need to grow will be needed.
A non-grass lawn can be grown not only from ground cover, but also from coniferous plants.
Tip: do not plant the entire area with a non-grass lawn, it is better to make spectacular blotches out of it on a more neutral background. For example, such a lawn will look very original if it is divided into modules between pavings on playgrounds and garden paths.
Grass “frames” interspersed with scilla will be an elegant frame for the slabs of the path or playground.
In places with heavy traffic, plant creeping thyme, awl-shaped phlox, grass carnation, creeping tenacious, creeping aubration, evergreen iberis, pinnate carnation, alpine carnation, stonecrop. For quieter corners of the garden – Carpathian bell, yaskolku, arabis, gypsophila and quarry. Well, for shady corners, the nettle (“nettle”), spring umbilical, hionodox, red goat weed, fragrant violet, lily of the valley (wild or garden) are suitable
