How to protect the apartment from the claws and teeth of pets?

We love our pets so much that we are ready to match the floor to the color of the dog, the bedding to the color of the cat, put up with different smells, wool, gnawed furniture and torn wallpaper. However, no matter how sloppy and indefatigable pets may be, you can minimize the risks of changing new furniture, updating repairs and, in general, hitting your nerves and wallet.

The main thing is to evaluate the apartment according to three important criteria:

  • resistance to claws, teeth and puddles
  • budget recovery
  • quick and easy cleaning

Experts told how to prepare an apartment for life with four-legged animals and gave practical advice.

Resistance of the apartment to nails and teeth

Upholstery, wallpaper, curtains and doors suffer from cat claws. The dog’s claws clatter hard against the parquet. In addition, many dogs love to gnaw on everything that falls under their paws – whether it be a chair, linoleum or a concrete corner. If a Chihuahua sucks lightly on the tassels on the curtains, then the pit bull is able to tear off the wooden jamb.

Any table or sofa can potentially become a victim, but “tasteless” risks are less. Much depends on the preferences of the animal: some love synthetics, others – leatherette. If furniture upholstery is necessary, and you have a “vomiting” cat, then choose the material – flock. There are no fibers in the latter, so there is nothing for the cat’s claws to catch on. A flock sofa is not interesting to tear. And, of course, everything that can be taken without upholstery must be taken without it.

It is better to replace tulle and curtains with roller, Japanese or blinds. Otherwise, animals may perceive flowing fabrics as a playground.

One of the most time-consuming issues in decorative repairs is the walls. Any wallpaper is a potential scratching post. So think about painted walls. In terms of strength and practicality, nothing compares to them – they can be washed, and if necessary, simply tinted. It is better to take white paint – it is cheaper, and then it is easier to repaint such walls.

Do not forget to hide the wires in the baseboards or in the boxes. Skirting boards should be correct – without transitional corners that animals love to pick out so much.

If your pet bites and scratches the doors, there is nothing to be done, unless, of course, they are made of iron. If you are for efficiency, then buy inexpensive doors so that it is budgetary to change them from time to time. But, if you cannot deny yourself a beautiful wooden door, then you should know that not very deep scratches can be effectively rubbed with a walnut for some time.

Paint Tips

  1. According to the resistance to washing, paints are divided into 5 classes. The first class is the most persistent. Paints below grade 3 must be wiped carefully.
  2. Silky-matt paints, having a gloss level of 7 to 12, are less dirty and clean up better than more matte ones.
  3. Acrylic water-borne enamels have even higher resistance to washing. They have both hardness and resistance to washing will be even higher.
  4. If you do not want to paint the walls, then, as an option, you can choose plastic wall panels – they are difficult to damage.

What to do with puddles?

While the puppy is learning patience, and the cat is making himself the owner of the territory, there is time to change the floor to one that absorbs moisture and odors less.
The most vandal-proof option in the kitchen and bathroom is tiles. It is desirable wide-format, so that there are fewer tile joints. However, keep in mind that a dog can sit on such a surface for no more than a minute – it slips, and it can also be dangerous for a dog to run. Therefore, cement tiles can serve as an alternative: they have a rougher surface, they are less slippery and beautiful. But in the latter case, you will have to spend a lot of money – such tiles are expensive because they are made by hand.

For living rooms, you can consider several options. It will be optimal for everyone – it all depends on how careful your pet is.

PVC material coating: it is PVC tile or PVC linoleum. They combine the advantages of parquet, linoleum and tiles in one product.

Marmoleum is very popular in Europe, but is still little known in Russia. Meanwhile, such material is very resistant to mechanical damage and is natural, on a cork basis. Marmoleum is rolled and tiled. The tiled one fits into the lock like a laminate, and it can be installed without the help of specialists. And, here, you won’t be able to put the roll on your own – it is capricious in cutting and fragile at the edges.

The use of laminate flooring and parquet boards is also not critical when keeping pets, but it must be understood that up to 80% natural wood raw materials in the structure of the laminate, and prolonged exposure to moisture can lead to irreversible changes in the structure and on the surface of the flooring.

What to do with wool?

We can’t get rid of it, to be honest. Therefore, so that the wool is not visible, choose the color of the floor to match the color of your animal. If the case is complex and you have two cats of different colors, then choose tiles with a small pattern or laminate / linoleum / PVC flooring with a tree pattern. The same with textiles. Life hack – neither white nor black wool is visible on gray textiles.

Remember to remove all carpets – there is no one that can be easily and quickly removed from wool, if it is not cellophane. If the carpet is vital, then we choose products with a fine pile, mats, children’s puzzle mats made of soft ecopolymer.
A robot vacuum cleaner and a mop with a microfiber nozzle will help you clean up – it collects wool well, and does not smear it like cotton and other fabrics.

Convenience and safety

Insert an anti-cat mosquito net into the windows – it has an increased mesh size in which claws do not get stuck. The animal will not have a reason to “fight” trying to free its paw. Be sure to check the reliability of the mesh fasteners: some fall out from a slight pressure. In addition, there are special protective grilles for oblique opening of windows so that the cat cannot get into the ajar sash.

If you have a dog, then it is worth making a separate place in the bathroom for washing paws and torso. Someone divides the bathroom into two parts: in one – the master’s bathroom, in the other – a floor with a slope and a drain, for dogs. The most enterprising owners of large four-legged build a small shower room at the entrance – but this option requires coordination of redevelopment and waterproofing of the hallway. In the store, look for special liners or trays that are put on the bathroom and connected directly to the drain
