Ecologically, wood, as a building material, is the most favorable for humans. A wooden floor is not as hard as a concrete floor, and it is beneficial for the musculoskeletal system. It is a kind of insulation. Differs in durability with proper waterproofing and is not difficult to install. Still, it should be laid under the supervision or with the participation of an experienced craftsman.
It will take
- old canvas fabric;
- river wet and dry sand;
- the remains of pine logs;
- clay solution.
Instruments: buckets, shovel, rake and broom, cross saw, cleaver, hatchet, heavy wooden mallet, gas burner, etc.
The process of laying a floor from wooden paving stones with artificial aging
So that later the paving stones do not creep apart, a reliable framing of the site of the future floor is necessary in the form of a concrete foundation or massive stone blocks.
We fill the site with fine gravel, level it and cover it on top with an old canvas cloth as a kind of substrate.
We cover the site with slightly wet river sand without large stones, level it with a rake until a layer about 5 cm thick is everywhere.
From the remnants of pine logs we cut “pancakes” approximately 9 cm thick with a cross saw, mark them in width also by 9 cm, split them into squares and rectangles, minimizing waste. We correct some of the bars with a hatchet to obtain even edges.
We lay wooden paving stones on the sand with overlapping joints. We compact each laid row by tapping with a hammer on the lateral edges, towards the already laid paving stones, preliminarily pressing down the compacted and already laid bars of the neighboring row with our feet.
We will use additional blocks to fill in the edges.
We plant each block of the row with hammer blows from above, which makes the floor stronger. Fill the gaps between the extreme bars and the foundation with clay mortar, leveling and sealing with a trowel.
For artificial aging and the manifestation of patterns on wooden paving stones, we burn them from above with the flame of a gas burner. At the same time, resinous substances with an indescribable aroma are released.
We put a small amount of dry sand on the surface of the wooden paving stone and spread it with a broom over the entire surface, which, filling cracks and gaps between the paving stones, makes the floor more dense and stable.
After all the manipulations, our floor made of wooden paving stones turned out to be not only durable and beautiful, but also noble, as if it was at least 100 years old.
